Lauren’s Testimony
North Texas resident and University of North Texas sophomore Lauren Minke readily reflects on her journey to find a stronger connection to Christ, interestingly through a growing performing arts ministry in Keller—Stand Performing Arts Ministry. She is not alone. It hasn't been long since the Today Show's Savannah Guthrie released a book about finding her connection to God in early February, joined by other influencers eager to share their spiritual origins and bonds. While the need to search for spirituality is common, the journey that tethers individuals to their faith is not.
For Minke, tragedies tested her connection, but she continued to describe herself as a believer. Her true connection story begins with dreams of being a performer. High school trauma and bad experiences with other community theatres discouraged and bred low self-confidence and a small social circle.
Scrolling through Instagram, she noticed an advertisement for Footloose auditions in the area. The iconic movie, celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2024, has been adapted to musical stages nationwide, including at Stand Performing Arts Ministry in North Texas.
"I wasn't going to go to the audition at first, but something, now I know was God, told me to go," says Minke.
Minke debuted in Stand's 2023 stage performance among a cast of peers and adults. Since then, she says her self-confidence "skyrocketed," and she found a path drawing her nearer to God. In the process, Minke found her people -- like-minded teens and young adults committed to maintaining their faith despite temptations.

Minke's first lead role was offered shortly after Footloose. She appeared in the production of Clue as Ms. Peacock in January.
"I have a big, supportive and dependable social circle (that I'd rather refer to as a family), and I have learned how to be excited about my successes while remaining humble and continuing to grow as an actress, but more importantly, a person," says Minke.

Her biggest challenge is balancing being a full-time student studying psychology and working part-time at the Cheesecake Factory. On her first day, she thought about Stand and what it taught her: take advantage of an opportunity if it's something you want to pursue. Stand and performing have places in her schedule, she claims, for that reason.
Minke hopes to become a therapist and pursue theatre in five to ten years. Meaningful relationships built at Stand, such as with production director Lindsay Huffman, largely contribute to her story.
"She has never seemed like a director to me, but in a way, a second mother who genuinely cares about everyone she comes across and will put their physical and mental health first, which is rare to find in theatre, says Minke.
Today, you can find Minke designing costumes, performing and telling "the world" about Stand and the path it paves toward self-discovery. The non-profit actively raises funds to purchase a theatre. It uses high school auditoriums and community theatre spaces in the area, but there are drawbacks, namely limited tech time, run time and the number of performances per show. She adds that the hard work and care placed in each show deserves a wider audience and a permanent setting. Minke's pitch to a prospective donor?
"Stand gives out multiple scholarships a year to ensure everyone who needs a place to embrace their talents and a home has one," she says.
According to Minke, Stand helps strengthen her bond with Christ, the greatest gift. The rewards of feeling seen, accepted and having authentic experiences appeared in her life at the right time.
"Lauren is a learner and a doer. That combo is the best inspiration for others. We expect great things from her," says Stand founder and president Jessie Beebe.
Stand Performing Arts Ministry welcomes individuals of all ages, from kindergarten to adulthood, to participate in hip-hop classes, vocal lessons, Spring Break and summer camps, musical theatre, and more. Celebrating its 19th year of existence in 2024, Stand revels in making plans with the support of advocates, partners, the community and friends.
